What a wonderful event to work with the same family again! A few years back we had the pleasure of photographing another family member of Usama for their event and so it was so great to be called back again!
This Valima (reception) took place at the Hilton Doubletree in Newark, CA. This property has been improved greatly with renovations and is a good spot for South Asian events because of the multiple ballrooms, great outdoor space for photos, and very close proximity to lo lots of other venues/caterers etc..
We started the shoot though at a private residence that was good for photos. We had amazing light shining through the trees and we got some stunning photo and video of them there. Then we headed to the venue where guests were just starting to arrive and we quickly shot the decor and then did more portraits of the couple before guests entered.
The main parts of a Valima or Muslim reception are an entrance of the couple, a speech by the Imam, who gives a brief talk about Islam and what marriage “is and means” in Islam, followed by speeches from friends and family.
Then for the next 1-2 hours is usually spent just taking photos on stage and having dinner. During this time every guest will be invited up for a photo with the couple. Some Valima’s will have perhaps some performances or open dancing, but this one was mostly just dinner.
